BLU (backlight unit) maker Radiant Opto-Electronics has developed BLUs specifically for 4-inch and above smartphones and will start shipments in the fourth quarter of 2014, company chairman PJ Wang said at an April 25 investors conference.
Due to clients’ adopting open cell LCD TV panels, Radiant saw TV-use BLU shipments drop significantly in 2013. Radiant has been cooperating with China-based vendors to market its TV-use BLUs.
Radiant shipped 25.721 million notebook- and tablet-use BLUs, 1.889 million LCD monitor-use units and 68,000 LCD TV-use units in the first quarter of 2014. Among applications, notebooks and tablets accounted for 80% of consolidated revenues of NT$12.568 billion (US$415 million), LCD monitors for 17%, LCD TVs for 2% and others for 1%. 66% of consolidated revenues came from South Korea-based clients, 28% from Taiwan, 3% from Japan, and 3% from China.
Radiant has set aside a capex budget of NT$2 billion for 2014 and will distribute a cash dividend per share of NT$7 for 2013, on a corresponding net EPS of NT$10.13.
