On-cell touch panels are gaining more attention in the market due to the technology’s light and thin features, according to industry sources.
The technology allows the touch panel plate to be directly placed on a color filter, which eliminates the need for an extra touch module. This allows for reduced thickness, lighter weight, as well as an overall shortened production process in addition to reduced costs.
In light of on-cell developments, more international- and China-based vendors are considering the technology, with shipments expected to increase going into the second half of 2014 as new smartphones are expected to be released, the sources said.
Previously, mainly China-based Coolpad was using the technology but the sources said new customers including ZTE as well as various vendors from France and Mexico in addition to various China-based telecom providers have started putting in orders as of the second quarter of 2014, the sources noted.
