China smartphone vendors are keen to adopt unibody metal-stamping chassis for their smartphones because of low production costs. Stamping can produce large volumes of products in a short time to meet requirements of a market where product life cycles are typically short, according to sources from chassis makers.
Lenovo and Huawei have both recently launched smartphones using metal-stamping chassis, while China-based Oppo will also start adopting such chassis for its new smartphones, noted the sources, adding that they expect more China-based smartphone vendors to follow suit in 2015.
The sources pointed out that stamping requires less processing time and manpower than CNC technology and costs 30% less.
However, despite its high costs, the CNC technology produces chassis of higher quality, the sources added.
With China smartphone vendors such as Lenovo and Xiaomi aggressively looking to expand overseas, the sources expect demand for metal-stamping chassis to grow strongly in 2015.
